Building a good house, not just a big house

May 17th, 2010 by Berit Griffin

BUILDER Online has a must-read article about how square footage isn’t the number one attribute homer buyers are looking for. We couldn’t agree more!

Yes, depending on the situation, there will always be a market for very large houses. but if you have ever read any of Sarah Susanka’s books (she is extensively quoted in the article), more square footage is not most people’s number one wish. People want life and interest in their houses. And frankly, that’s a lot more a lot more challenging goal to meet. Rather than just building the stereotypically large McMansion, builders now have to have a laser focus on design.

This is a good thing. Susanka even goes so far as to say,  “I think the downturn is going to dramatically improve the American home.” In this painful time for the building industry, it can seem hard to believe that the recession is a good thing. But Susanka has a point: We’ve gone too far in the direction of excess. Now it’s time to get back to good design and building.

Take a look at the article and let us know what you think!
