Love and housing

February 15th, 2012 by Berit Griffin

Since it was just Valentine’s Day yesterday, let’s talk about love, baby! Love and housing that is.

We found an interesting article in TIME called Romance & Real Estate. It goes through some differences men and women have with housing, as well as what your housing situation tells a romantic partner. Whether you see this as a new marketing angle for your business (“Build a house, find love!”) or just an interesting way of seeing how housing affects life, here are a some interesting tidbits:

  • People like homeowners, but not too much. Although owning a home might say “Responsible adult who can commit”, 43 percent of people surveyed by Trulia said that it wasn’t a romantic dealbreaker.
  • Men are from the city, women are from the suburbs…here’s an interesting factoid: men love ladies who live alone in the city, while women prefer male suburbanites who live alone. Either way, apparently roomates are not welcome in the search for love.
  • Trulia found that if you’re living with your parents, you might be tanking your chances at love: only 5% of their respondents would be interested in dating you.
  • The home feature both men and women want is a master bathroom. Maybe love means double sinks and bidet?

The survey is fun, but it’s interesting to note that some things like having a roommate or living with your parents are things that more people seem to be doing in this economy. We’ve also talked about building and remodeling for these new situations–more bedrooms and bathrooms as opposed to public space within a home, and building “mother-in-law apartments” for returning children. The heart wants what it wants though!

Do statistics like these make you think about the way you build and remodel homes?
