The Future of Green Building

April 29th, 2010 by Berit Griffin

It was recently Earth Day (did you do anything to mark the occasion?) and Treehugger recently spotlighted Michelle Kaufman, an architect, who gave her view on where green building is going. Please read the whole article–it’s fascinating–but here are some of Kaufman’s main points.

  • No more McMansions–they’re expensive and not Earth friendly.
  • Moving from trading lightly or not at all on the Earth towards our dwellings actually helping us improve our health. Kaufman offers the example of “porous, breathable walls that ‘drink’, purify and store water for the building inhabitants.”
  • Designing for deconstruction as opposed to destruction.
  • Using a truly collaborative approach among many disciplines to achieve a better green building goal.

What are your hopes and predictions for the future of green building?
